Another top spring day, sunny periods with a good breeze from the west so after breakfast I hitched up the trailer and headed down Squiz Lane at The Manor with conditions looking ideal for a longboard cruise again :) With the wind offshore it is hard to gauge its strength but with some white water out to sea I took a chance with my 8.5 which suits the longboard really well and can take a lot of wind! Super easy launch and set off towards the River Orwell, I fancied a trip up the river but with two ferries heading out and the wind pretty strong I decided against it and turned by the shipping channel reaching back to the beach at Landguard to take a few pics and decided to do some long two mile broad reaches up the coast. With the track at the back and both feet in the straps sailing this big raceboard is such fun managing to break 21 knots twice, in fact I got 7 runs over 20 knots just failing to get a 20-knot average not bad on a big board in open sea:) Sailing broad is just the best as it certainly smooths out the sea and I soon reached The Dip but decided to go a little further actually ending up on Bawdsey Beach where I stopped for a snack:) Now all I had to do was beat back as the wind was now constantly gusting over 20 knots with the sea state picking up. I love sailing upwind, both feet in the straps the daggerboard down cruising through a big sea. It was a bit rough by the shingle bar at the Deben with the tide going out strongly but I got through that OK and things calmed down a little. By doing long runs I made it back in 7/8 tacks. I actually sailed past The Manor so I could enjoy one last good reach back to the beach. So, three tiring hours out on the water in the sunshine in some good conditions, a wind from the west certainly gives you ideal longboard and foiling condition’s:) As I was packing up Ian came down for a chat, he had been foiling at Levington I then had a word with Al Wiz who was working on a beach hut and hoped to go foiling at 4. Then home for a shower, lunch, a catch up with Mag before heading to the Doctor for an injection in my troublesome heel, it was a little painful but hopefully it will end my heel pain which I have been troubled with for a year now! I have just got to take it easy for a bit, at least it gives more time for my new foil kit to arrive!
